Standard 1
Teachers know the subjects they are teaching.

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines she or he teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils

Evidence1: Lesson Plan for “The Story of My Life..So Far” Video Podcast

Rationale 1: This lesson plan is the final project of the unit on podcasting. The course that this lesson plan was developed for is my “Computers & Society” that is open to enrollment of freshman through seniors though mostly freshman take this class. In this unit the students learn how to use PhotoStory 3, Audacity and Microsoft Photo Editor. In this project the students find digital photographs or scan photographs of them through the different years and they also had to locate music from the different years of their life.
The students also had to research for important events that occurred during their lifetime to create a timeline vodcast (video podcast). Before this project, we had done separate projects on just using the tools needed. I demonstrated each tool to the students and did examples with them each step of the way. This project went over very well as the students were really involved with it and I would definitely do it again except I need to better define my expectations.

KSD:
1.K.3 The teacher relates his/her disciplinary knowledge to other subject areas

I demonstrated each tool (Microsoft Photo Editor, PhotoStory3 and Audacity) to the students and had the students create little projects demonstrating their skill in using the tools before combining all three into the final project. I also showed them an example of the final project that I based on my life.

1.S.4 The teacher engages students in generating knowledge and testing hypotheses according to the methods of inquiry and standards of evidence used in the discipline.

By having the students create smaller projects on each software tool and giving them feedback through a grading rubrics, the students understand what was expected and what improvements they would need to on the final project.

1.D.3 The teacher has enthusiasm for the discipline(s) s/he teaches and sees connections to everyday life

By showing the students my example of the final project and not being afraid what was in it gave them a sense that it is ok to have fun with this project. The students were excited to save and show their projects to their families as well as others. Also these software tools are all free and so some students were excited to the fact that they could continue to build this or do others at home.
