Evidence 1: Action Research Paper: Understanding and Appreciating Computer History

Rationale 1: My action research was based on a class that is offered to freshmen through seniors. The students are at different levels of learning and maturity. To help them learn the material, many different approaches were used. Besides the traditional face-to-face, there were lessons online and the students were to use an online discussion board to exchange information and make comments on other classmates’ posts. This was done to help the student that might be too shy to interact in the classroom in front of their peers. Also by having the assignments online and posting of all the notes online then the students had access to them outside of the classroom which would enable to have more time to learn the material and get their assignments done. Another way to help the students learn was through the use of online review games which the students found quite enjoyable.

I also changed the time frame of when this unit was taught. This unit is usually one of the toughest for the students and I use to teach it first, but I moved it back so the students which are mostly freshmen could adjust to the way I teach as well as adjust to being in high school.

2.K.2 The teacher understands that students’ physical, social, emotional, moral, and cognitive development influence learning and knows how to address these factors when making instructional decisions.

By making majority of this unit online, I realized that the students of today are ‘digital natives’ and this instruction met the type of learning that they are familiar with. With the use of an online discussion board also allowed the students to take part of class without feeling self-concious about what they were saying and be embarrassed in front of their classmates.

2.S.2 The teacher stimulates student reflection on prior knowledge and links new ideas to already familiar ideas, making connections to students’ experiences, providing opportunities for active engagement, manipulation, and testing of ideas and material, and encouraging students to assume responsibility for shaping their learning tasks

Majority of these students have used computers since they have been in First grade and by having the unit available online provided the students to use their computer knowledge. Also every assignment was online so the students had responsibility for doing their work whether they were at school or at home. There would be no excuse for being absent or lost worksheets.

2.D.1 The teacher appreciates individual variation at each developmental level and shows respect for the diverse talents of all learners, and is committed to help them develop self-confidence and competence.

By using the online discussion board, the students could think out their responses so they could say exactly what they wanted to say. Also there was no fear of speaking in front of their classmates if the student was shy or not comfortable doing so. Also I made sure that I responded to that student or students through email immediately so they had feedback and could also feel good about what they were doing.
