Standard 3 Teachers understand that children learn differently. The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.
Evidence 1: Multiple Intelligence Inventory
Rationale 1: By taking this inventory, I learned what type of learner I am and probably a very good indicator of the type of teacher I am as well. Two of the styles that I rated at the highest was Body/Kinesthetic and Mathematics which was a little of surprise as I teach freshmen Algebra and am a coach for three different sports (Football, Wrestling and Softball).I am constantly moving around while I teach do believe the best way to learn is by doing and interacting.I am also very much a numbers type person and like solving problems that are posed to me. Where I ranked the lowest was Intrapersonal and Linguistic. The intrapersonal is surprising because I do like to work alone and I do assign projects that are to be done by an individual and not as a group.Linguistic was also surprising because I enjoy reading and memorizing trivia and facts. By having to focus on my inventory, made me realize that not everyone learn the same way and I do think that I have varied my instruction as well as my assignments in a desire to reach most of my students in a way so they succeed.
KSD: 3.K.4 The teacher understands how students’ learning is influenced by individual experiences, talents, and prior learning, as well as language, culture, family and community values.
Looking how I learn really made me focus on how I was influenced by my family and community I grew up in.I came from a small town and I now teach in a small town and a lot of those influences I had growing up are the same influences my students now have. This helps me understand them better and I am better able to help them learn because of it.
3.S.8 The teacher creates a learning community in which individual differences are respected.
In my classroom, there is no “dumb” question and I am constantly trying to get the students not to be afraid to ask questions.I always tell them that the question they want to ask is a question that at least two other students want to ask as well.
3.D.1 The teacher believes that all children can learn at high levels and persists in helping all children achieve success
By looking at my own Multiple Intelligence Inventory and knowing what I have to do to achieve at the highest level helps me understand that not all students learn the same way and if I try different approaches of teaching, I can help them also achieve success and learn a high level as well.
