Standard 4 Teachers know how to teach. The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of technology, to encourage children's development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
Evidence 1: Webquest: Truth or Lie – Evaluating Web Sites
Rationale 1: This a webquest that was created to help the students to decide if a web site was telling truths or if they are made up of opinions or false facts. This webquest is made up five assignments that will have the students first read and take a quiz about a fake web site, learn about a web site is and how to read an Uniform Resource Locator (URL or web address) and then use the tools that they learned to evaluate a final web site and decide based on what they learned if it is real or fake.
KSD 4.K.3 The teacher knows how to enhance learning through the use of a wide variety of materials and technological resources (e.g. computers, audio-visual technologies, videotapes and discs, local experts, primary documents and artifacts, texts, reference books, literature, and other print resources). I created this webquest by putting together four different learning objects that I had found on evaluating web sites. The students use an online quiz as well as worksheets to answer the questions. The students get two different aspects on how to evaluate web sites as well as some tips that I give them to help them with this webquest.
4.S.4 The teacher varies his or her role in the instructional process (e.g. instructor, facilitator, coach, audience) in relation to the content and purposes of instruction and the needs of students.
For this webquest, I direct the students to the classroom blog to find the initial link to start the webquest, but from there they learn the content of it from doing the work.I do check their assignments immediately when they turn them in for immediate feedback so they know if they are doing it correct which is especially important before they get to the final assignment of this webquest. While they are doing this webquest in class, I do walk around and observe and I am available to the students if they need help.I do also offer some tips for evaluating that is not available through the webquest. 4.D.1 The teacher values the development of students’ critical thinking, independent problem solving, and performance capabilities By having the students do this webquest on their own, the students are responsible for their learning instead of getting lecture notes from me.This webquest requires them to be active in their learning and then requires them to use what they learn to evaluate a final web site in order to determine if it real or fake.
