Rationale 1: This discussion board was set up at the beginning of the school year for the class “Computers & Society”.It has been used at least once with every unit in the class.I demonstrated to the students how to post a topic on it and difference between ‘replying’ and ‘quoting’ on other students’ posts. We have used the discussion board to comment on what we did this past summer as an introductory lesson.Students posted their favorite emoticons and acronyms and commented on their classmates.Students posted information about different important people and computers in computer history and then other students would add more information to those posts as we learned more information in classroom lecture.Students have also posted information that they found interesting from classroom readings. As the school year as progressed, the students have gotten more used to using the discussion board and the participation of using it has improved. Some students have even created their own topics for discussion.
KSD 5.K.2 The teacher understands how social groups function and influence people, and how people influence groups.
Using the discussion board has allowed students that normally will not participate in a classroom setting, to participate and not being concerned that a classmate might make fun of them in front of others. With a mixture of freshman to seniors, an underclassman might be afraid to participate in the classroom but an online discussion allows them to participate without that fear. 5.S.2 The teacher engages students in individual and cooperative learning activities to develop motivation to achieve, by (for example) relating lessons to students’ personal interests, allowing students to have choices in their learning, and leading students to ask questions and pursue problems that are meaningful to them. In the Computer History unit, the students had to research an important person and computer. They had to find important computer related facts and post that information on the discussion board as a topic and create a slide that was used for classroom notes. After going through the classroom notes with me adding some important facts that may have been missed, the students went back to the discussion board and added the new facts from the notes or research that they did to the topics.By having the facts placed on the discussion board, students had another way to help review for the test. 5.D.3 The teacher values the role of students in promoting each other’s learning and recognizes the importance of peer relationships in establishing a climate for learning. Using the discussion board to have the students comment on topics or post topics and then having each student to reply or quote on at least two of their classmates’ posts made them really look at what each other is saying. The discussion board gave them a chance to really look at what they were saying to each other and take their time in analyzing their thoughts. Also by adding their thoughts to their classmates’ posts allowed them to be more active in the classroom and re-inforce what they were thinking and give them confidence in knowing that their classmates were maybe thinking the same.
