Evidence 1: PowerPoint Slide Show – Computer History – The Calculating Years & Podcast – Blaise Pascal

Blaise Pascal Podcast

Rationale 1: This is a slide show that I created for the unit on Computer History. This slide show is for the early years on why we wanted to create the computer. It is on early calculating machines and different people whose ideas who would help develop the basis for the computer. Besides showing pictures of the people or machines, there is also links to the internet sites that demonstrate how an abacus works and also how Napier’s Bones worked. I also included a podcast that I created as an additional reference for this unit. Unfortunately this is the only podcast I have done at this point, but I plan on creating more for each person and machine because it is also good for the students to hear what I have added that might not be shown in the slides.

KSD

6.K.4 The teacher recognizes the importance of nonverbal, verbal and media communication techniques.

By using a slide show, the students do not only get the notes but also can see pictures of the people or machines that I talking about. Also by having links to demonstrations of how some of the calculating machines worked gives the students a better appreciation of how they worked.

6.S.5 The teacher knows how to use a variety of media communication tools, including audiovisual aids and computers, to enrich learning opportunities.

By using more than just notes on a board, the students get a better learning experience because they can see a picture of the person or machine and can associate it better as they put the facts to a picture. Also by having podcasts, the students can go back and relisten to the facts at their own time and comfort which will help them learn.

6.D.2 The teacher values many ways in which people seek to communicate and encourages many modes of communication in the classroom.

Not every student can learn by just listening to the teacher and taking notes, by creating the slide show the students have a more visual way of learning. By including the online demonstrations, the students can interact and actually learn by doing.
