Standard 8 Teachers know how to test for student progress. The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the pupil.
Evidence 1: Rubric – Story of My Life..So Far Podcast
Rationale 1:The creation of this rubric for an assignment on creating a podcast shows that I understand how to assess students’ work. This is the first real rubric that I have ever created as I am more comfortable using checklist.I have found it hard to assess student’s creativity and it easier to check off if they met a requirement instead. But more and more of my assignments do involve creativity so creating this rubric I think will help me grade them.I have not had the opportunity to use this rubric yet, so I have not seen if this will do exactly what I hope but I think it and if I have to, I will make changes to make it better.
KSD 8.K.1 The teacher understands the characteristics, uses, advantages, and limitations of different types of assessments (e.g. criterion-referenced and norm-referenced instruments, traditional standardized and performance-based tests, observation systems, and assessments of student work) for evaluating how students learn, what they know and are able to do, and what kinds of experiences will support their further growth and development. As I stated, I never really used rubrics before as I favored checklists but checklist do have limitations as they do help grade creativity or effort.Using this rubric will allow me to evaluate those better and help the students understand their grade better rather than did I do or not. 8.S.3 The teacher uses assessment strategies to involve learners in self-assessment activities, to help them become aware of their strengths and needs, and to help them to set personal goals for learning. By using a rubric the students can see exactly why they received the points they did as the rubric does not just only give the points they earned but gives a brief explanation of why. Also I plan giving the students the rubric at the same time that they get the assignment so they will see what they are graded on. 8.D.2 The teacher is committed to using assessment to identify student strengths and promote student growth rather than to deny students access to learning opportunities. The rubric is good way to the student to show what they did well and what they need to work on.Now that I have created one rubric, the other rubrics I will create will probably be a lot like this one and that too will help the students as they can use the earlier rubrics to help them improve in their weak areas.
